Top Interior Design Trends of 2024
2024 is already shaping up to be an exciting year in the world of interior design, with a host of new and fun trends emerging. At Black Forest Design & Build, we're here to guide you through these new styles, helping you blend modern flair with your unique taste.
This year, we're seeing a delightful shift toward design aesthetics that add character and charm to modern spaces. But that doesn’t mean you need to tear down your entire home and start anew. It's all about striking the perfect balance between being on trend and creating a timeless space. We believe that great interior design transcends fleeting trends and remains appealing and functional long into the future.
Whether you're considering a big makeover or just want to add a few contemporary touches, these trends are your gateway to a home that feels refreshed. Let's explore how you can transform your home into a space that's current and designed to stay fresh for years to come.
Streamlined Design with a Touch of Custom Detail
In 2024, we're embracing the beauty of simplicity and the charm of custom details. Our philosophy at Black Forest Design & Build is all about finding that sweet spot where functionality meets creativity. We love clean lines and designs that make the most of your space, keeping things elegantly simple yet highly functional.
Take, for instance, our work on the Keepsake Lane project. Here, we crafted a custom bench seat for the breakfast area, where the family gathers and shares precious moments, creating a functional, inviting space. Made from high-quality custom leather and crafted in collaboration with local artisans, this bench is more than just seating—it's a testament to our commitment to blending practicality with a personal touch. The sleek design ensures the space isn't crowded or overly ornate, yet it stands out as a unique, carefully thought-out focal point of the home.
Our expertise lies in creating custom pieces that resonate with homeowners’ unique tastes. From cabinetry to built-in bookshelves and fireplaces, our custom designs are inspired by the distinctive features of each home, like the Dairy Table-inspired kitchen island in the St. Martins Lane project.
A Marble Resurgence
2024 kitchen designs are putting marble countertops front and center. There's just something special about using a natural material with unique veining and depth. But while we love its classic look, it's important for our clients to embrace the idea of marble gaining character and developing a patina over time. This evolving beauty is what draws us to it!
In projects like our St. Martins Lane and North Church Street kitchens, homeowners have returned to the beauty of classic materials. They chose marble not just for the countertops but extended it to the backsplash and ledge spill as well. This continuity of marble throughout the kitchen creates a naturally gorgeous and cohesive look, celebrating the material's inherent beauty.
Honoring Historic Details & Vintage Elements
We’re continuing to cherish and preserve the historical integrity of homes. One way we honor these details is by matching original molding in newly renovated spaces instead of opting for modern, clean lines. At our Church Street Tavern project, we utilized the beams from their home on the kitchen ceiling, doorway, and hood mantle for their warmth and character. This reflects a growing appreciation for storytelling in design and blending the old with the new. Another way that we’re showing our appreciation for the past is by incorporating vintage pieces. We're seeing a growing desire among our clients to integrate these special elements into their homes.
Also, in keeping with many older homes, the popularity of defined spaces is growing. Though open-concept layouts have been popular for many years, folks are wanting a bit more privacy.
Rise of Colorful Kitchens
While neutral colors remain a mainstay in kitchen design, we’re noticing an exciting shift. More of our clients are moving away from traditional white kitchens, opting instead for moody and expressive colors like deep greens, rich blacks, and bold blues, adding a layer of warmth to the kitchen and offering practical benefits. For instance, these colors are more forgiving for hiding everyday spills and stains, which is a real advantage in a busy kitchen.
Interestingly, even the “white” kitchens we design aren't stark white. They lean towards off-white shades that appear lighter yet have subtle undertones of cream or grey for warmth and ambiance. To maintain a cohesive look, we often suggest extending these color choices to ceilings, ensuring that cabinets, trim, and moldings blend harmoniously and maintain their clean appearance.
Warmth of Copper Fixtures
Following brass’s resurgence, we anticipate a further shift towards warmer metal finishes in 2024, particularly copper. Copper fixtures in the kitchen or bathroom offer a welcoming and sophisticated feel that stands out against both neutral and bold color palettes, providing a sense of depth and warmth. The reflective quality of copper also adds a subtle glow, enhancing the ambiance and making rooms feel more inviting and cozy. This shift towards warmer metals reflects a broader trend in design where comfort and personalization take center stage in our living spaces.
Concrete Shower Walls
In 2024, concrete shower walls are redefining bathroom aesthetics. This finish is a departure from the ubiquity of tiles and grout lines. They’re easy to clean and radiate a timeless charm, reminiscent of aged surfaces. However, it's important to note that concrete shower walls come with character, as they occasionally feature chatter marks, adding a unique sense of movement. But we embrace these details for their unique appeal.
At Black Forest Design & Build, we're excited to help you navigate these trends and create spaces that reflect your personal story. Whether you're drawn to the elegance of marble countertops or the uniqueness of custom pieces, our team is ready to bring your vision to life.
